I guess that decision potentially changed a part of my life. I can vividly remember pondering this option, but to this day, I can't remember exactly why I decided to go for a run rather than heading in right away. I was just about to head out the door when one of my friends, who knew I was heading out to meet up with this girl, asked if I'd be interested in going for a run before heading over. Soon after I awoke, I was showered and ready to head back into New York the friends I was staying with were on the New Jersey side. We had talked about going up again to the observation deck if the day was sunny to take advantage of better conditions and a better view. Having met a fellow traveller the day before on the ferry ride back from Ellis Island to Manhattan, we were planning to meet up again that morning around 8:45am at the World Trade Centre. Q Tell me about your experiences on September 11, 2001. It was not an ideal evening to be there since the rain and cloud cover continued, but I had met another traveller from Eastern Europe and since her time in NYC was short, she had hoped to go up that day - so I decided to go with her.īecause of the weather, it was nearly empty up there, and there was no access to the rooftop observatory, only the indoor observatory. Hours later I found myself on the observation level in the south tower. Even still, with the clouds all around, the towers stood out, almost out of place and even more out of proportion to the buildings around them. At one moment the twin towers were bathed in sunlight - the next they were surrounded by deep blue/grey storm clouds. When I took this photo, I was on the grounds by the Statue of Liberty. It started off as a beautiful sunny day, and finding myself in lower Manhattan in the early part of the afternoon, I thought it'd be a perfect opportunity to take the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty and visit the Immigration Museum on Ellis Island. I was staying with friends who lived there, but I was exploring the city on my own that day. This was my first visit ever to New York City, and I was anxious and excited to see it all. Q What stands out for you when you think back to what you were doing on September 10, 2001? What do you recall about that day, and the circumstances in which you took the photo? The Winter Garden Atrium used to connect to the WorldTradeCenter via a 400ft pedestrian bridge.īy the time the 9/11 clear-up officially ended in May 2002, workers had moved more than 1.8 million tonnes of debris. The garden's once gleaming 10-storey glass structure was bent and shattered by falling debris from the towers. Many of the photos document a desolate and apocalyptic view from overheard, showing once renowned tourist hot-spots, such as the Winter Garden Atrium (as shown), beaten, dust-clad and lifeless. Plumes of smoke arise from the debris of the World Trade Centre. More than 2,000 deaths have been attributed to 9/11-related diseases and illnesses.

The images were captured on a Canon Powershot G1 by a currently unidentified member of the World Trade Center clean-up crew who has since died. Workers stand surrounded by metal and once what used to be office floors - brimmed and bustling with people. Taken from above and on the ground, the cache of pictures in large show workers and heavy machinery submerged in a deep and ominous chasm of scorched iron. They're all from various viewpoints and offer an extensive, comprehensive look at what Ground Zero was like for the men and women who had the unenviable task of cleaning it up. Others were taken from ground level in areas being cleared. The photos were taken from inside buildings, elevated above the debris. The image of two passenger planes flying into the twin towers of the World Trade Center is permanently etched inpublic memory. Friday marks 19 years of the 9/11 terror attacks in America.
